Elevens pushing the Boundaries

November 2, 2011

ELEVENS are interested in meeting visual artists based in the Northwest… and talking about the possibility of forming a collaboration. In the past they have worked with visual artists using projections, photography, film and video.
This is an opportunity to come and see the guys play and have a think about what you could bring to the project.
The Dock hope to form a relationship with ELEVENS over the next while … during the collaboration you will be able to use The Dock as a space to develop and play with your ideas … any guidance and equipment we can offer will be available to you … all in a creative and professional environment.
You never know where it might lead ….
The Space @ The Dock presents ELEVENS Fri Nov 4th 8.30pm til late. €10.

Jazz with the Mike Nielsen Quartet this Friday at The Dock

October 4, 2011

Mike Nielsen Quartet plays The Space @ The Dock

The Dock Arts Centre Page on Facebook provided all the following information so solidly well, I am deciding to steal the whole yoke of a post for our blog and have a lazy night off tonight! Couldn’t have said it better anyway! So if you are belonging to the half of the population on Facebook you can always “LIKE” The Dock there too and get your little bits and pieces from all corners and angles, but do not go off on me dear reader just for that, here you’ll always find that tiny bit extra, a bit from behind the scenes, a bit of a blogger secret, an additional reminder and a little smile if you share my sense of humour… but for my suddenly very lazy night you’ll get Dock-Facebook-Information here too, read ahead, and I’ll just go and put my feet up!

Book yer tickets for Friday night, gig looks brilliant!

In keeping with our policy of providing up front high quality sounds from across the music spectrum The Space at The Dock welcomes the superb Mike Nielsen Quartet on Friday 7th October for an intimate café style concert of acoustic jazz.

The Mike Nielsen Quartet is a new exciting acoustic quartet assembled by guitarist Mike Nielsen that brings together some of the finest musicians… on the music scene today: Boston born vocalist Ellen Demos, clarinettist, Brendan Doyle and percussionist Shane O’Donovan. The music, composed by the leader, is innovative and comprises an eclectic mix of musical influences from jazz, classical, rock and traditional cultures. Their new CD, Acoustic Sound Recipes, was critically acclaimed in the Irish Times: “Guitarist Mike Nielsen’s fine quartet marries jazz with Indian, Caribbean, Jewish and African idioms to create a fascinating hybrid ” The players, “bring much to the table, including flexibility and spontaneity combined with rigorously inventive interplay and a lyrical blend of voice and clarinet, amid a deft mix of written ensembles, group improvisations and solos. ”

You can expect musicianship of the highest calibre and a programme that touches on all the essential elements of modern jazz with no small amount of exciting improvisation along the way. As an added bonus Mike Nielsen will give a master class in guitar on the afternoon of the performance from 4.30pm to 5.30pm. Places are limited to 6 and the master class will cost €10. If you book for the concert as well the workshop is free! Tickets for the intimate evening concert are €15/€12 and can be booked now by calling 071 96 50828
