The Loot…

It is like awaiting guests, special visitors to arrive and show you the loot. Today the crates carrying John Walker’s precious masterpieces will arrive from Boston, the USA.

This is the first time in Ireland for such a collection of Walker’s work to be exhibited, which of course adds to the excitement.

It is an amazing thing to think of all the art work travelling about the world at any one given time. The care and organisation that is given to ensuring that the work is tended to properly and appropriately is concentrated by all those involved.

Next week will bring the specialist of deliveries with John Walker himself due to arrive on Monday to oversee the installation of his work in Gallery 1 and 2 of The Dock.

John Walker: Painter opens on Saturday 27th June at 2pm. On the evening before the opening Alice Lyons will be in conversation with John Walker in the galleries at 6pm. Admission is free to both events but booking is advisable for the gallery conversation. Box Office 071 9650828.

Interlude

A favourite aspect to working in The Dock is the relationship that develops with the art that shows in our galleries.

I feel privileged to get to know the artwork over the time that it is with us.

I often reflect on this while showing visitors around a particular exhibition.

I think about how my feelings towards certain pieces are cultivated over the time that the exhibition is with us. How it is very different from just popping in and seeing the piece of work for a few moments, which of course, is great and can indeed also instil a pure and quality experience.

Yet through spending time with an exhibition a relationship grows. There is a period of time together, times when you are there for each other. 

Leaving a beeping, ringing, dialling, typing, office I stole away to the galleries. Sanctity abounded and I was thankful.

Moments with Ecstasy’s Aftermath by Denis Farrell and my head felt well. I felt cleansed and ready … ready for everything.

Hi all at the Dock!

Just thought I would let you know that the UK is having its first Art & Forestry conference in the UK this week June 10, 09 as part of the RSA Art & Ecology programme).

I did a solo exhibition and public film screening at The Dock in 2006 on ‘the local project’ about the large amount of broadleaf forests that were planted by local Leitrim people in the early nineties across Co. Leitrim (it was a Crann initiative led by Jan Alexander and funded by the Irish Forest Service). Since then I’ve used the knowledge I have gained working with foresters on a SLOW Art forest project in my own wood in south Co. Carlow. My art & ecology notebook blog documents an ongoing diary in images, short films conversations between myself, foresters, our local community & beyond, detailing an example of how we are turning our small 20 year old monoculture spruce plantation into an ecologically & economically sustainable real FOREST.
